The Story of Hazrat Musa (A.S.) in English

Hazrat Musa (A.S.) used to graze sheep. One day, he was traveling with his wife, children, and belongings. While on the journey, they reached near Mount Toor. There, Hazrat Musa (A.S.) saw a glowing light on the high mountain. He told his family, “Let me go and see what this light is. I might bring back a torch or some guidance from there.”

When Hazrat Musa (A.S.) climbed the mountain, a voice called out to him from the unseen:

“We are Allah, take off your shoes. We have chosen you as Our messenger.”

Hazrat Musa (A.S.) was astonished and deeply moved. His heart started beating rapidly, and he immediately took off his shoes in obedience. Then Allah instructed him to go to Egypt and convey His message to Pharaoh with kindness. He was also told to take his brother, Hazrat Haroon (A.S.), along for support.

Allah blessed Hazrat Musa (A.S.) with several miracles as signs of His power. Hazrat Musa (A.S.) and Hazrat Haroon (A.S.) went to Pharaoh’s court and told him that there is no god but Allah and that they were His messengers. They reminded Pharaoh of the Day of Judgment and the consequences of one’s actions, urging him to believe in Allah and stop oppressing people, or else he would face destruction.

Pharaoh became angry and arrogantly said, “I am the greatest king! I am the one who provides for everyone.” He even told his courtiers, “I am your lord, the highest.”

Hazrat Musa (A.S.) replied, “I will show you the signs of Allah.”

Hazrat Musa (A.S.) cast down his staff, and by the will of Allah, it turned into a massive and fearsome serpent. Hazrat Musa (A.S.) placed his hand into his cloak, and when he withdrew it, it shone with a brilliant, divine light. Despite seeing these miracles, Pharaoh called it sorcery and said, “You are just a skilled magician. I will gather the best magicians of my kingdom to challenge you.”

As ordered by Pharaoh, expert magicians were brought for a public contest. They threw down ropes that appeared to turn into snakes through their magic. Then Hazrat Musa (A.S.) cast down his staff, and it turned into a giant serpent that swallowed all their illusions. The magicians immediately recognized that this was not magic — it was a true miracle from Allah.

Witnessing these miracles, the magicians fell in prostration and declared, "We believe in the true Lord — the Lord of Musa and Haroon!" This enraged Pharaoh. In his anger, he ordered the magicians to be executed and increased the cruelty against the people of Bani Israel. Seeing their suffering, Allah instructed Hazrat Musa (A.S.) to take his nation and leave Egypt.

Hazrat Musa (A.S.) gathered the people of Bani Israel and began the migration. When Pharaoh learned of this, he chased them with his army. As the Bani Israel reached the edge of the sea, they found themselves trapped — Pharaoh’s army was closing in from behind.

Hazrat Musa (A.S.) calmed his people and said,

“Do not worry, my Lord is with me.”

Obeying Allah's command, Hazrat Musa (A.S.) struck the sea with his staff. The sea split into two, creating a dry path between the waters. Bani Israel crossed safely through this path.

When Pharaoh and his soldiers reached the sea, he ordered them to follow the same path. But as soon as they were in the middle, Allah commanded the sea to return to its original state. By Allah’s power, the sea split apart, creating a clear path. As soon as the people of Bani Israel had safely crossed, the sea closed in by Allah’s command, engulfing Pharaoh and his forces beneath its waves.

Years later, a body preserved for thousands of years was discovered from the sea. Many believe this is the body of Pharaoh, as Allah had said in the Qur'an that He would preserve Pharaoh’s body as a sign for future generations. Today, this body is on display in a museum in Cairo, Egypt.
