Uthay Na Thay Abhi Ham Haal E Dil Sunany KO

Peer Naseer Ud Din Naseer Poetry

Jamal-e-bada-o-saghar mein hain ramooz bohat,
Meri nigah se dekho sharab khanay ko.

Qadam qadam pe rulaya hamein muqaddar ne,
Hum un ke sheher mein aaye thay muskuranay ko.

Na jaane ab woh mujhe kya jawab dete hain,
Suna to di hai unhein dastaan "Sunanay ko."

Kaho ke hum se rahen door, hazrat-e-waiz,
Baray kaheen ke yeh aaye sabaq parhanay ko.

Ab ek jashn-e-qayamat hi aur baqi hai,
Adaon se to woh behla chuke zamanay ko.

Shab-e-firaq na tum aaske na maut aayi,
Ghamon ne gher liya tha gareeb khanay ko.

Naseer! Jin se tawaqqa thi saath dene ki,
Tule hain mujh pe wohi ungliyan uthanay ko.

(English Translation)

We had not yet risen to express the state of our hearts,

But the world had already settled to write its own margins.

In the midst of spring, autumn arrived to erase it,

As buds took steps forward only to smile.

The fire of flowers burned every twig in the garden,

And the breeze of spring blew away my nest.

There are deep secrets hidden in the beauty of wine and goblets,

Look through my eyes to understand the tavern.

Fate made us suffer at every step,

We had come to their city with hopes to smile.

I wonder what answer they will give me now,

For I have already told them my story.

Tell them to stay away from me, O preacher,

Such great men have come to teach us lessons!

Now, only the grand celebration of Doomsday remains,

For they have already beguiled the world with their charms.

On the night of separation, neither you arrived nor did death,

Sorrows surrounded my humble abode.

Naseer! Those from whom I expected support,

Are the very ones raising fingers against me.
